Tap into Nonprofit Thought Leadership to boost your mission |
|
|
Thought leadership might sound like a fancy term, but at its core, it’s simple: It’s about sharing what you know so more people trust and engage with your nonprofit.
And when trust and engagement are high with your cause, fundraising gets easier, too. And here’s the best part—you don’t need to be a TED speaker or a CEO to be seen as a leader in your space. You just need a plan!
In this issue of Changemaker Mondays ☀️ ☕ 🌍, we’re breaking down three simple steps to help your nonprofit stand out and build trust through thought leadership.

It starts here:
1. Define Your Area of Expertise 🔍
Every nonprofit has something valuable to share. In fact, because you’re tackling a community or social issue everyday, you likely have some subject matter expertise to share on that issue. Start by thinking about:
- What are the challenges that you tackle daily and the unique way your nonprofit solves them?
- Which trends are you noticing in your nonprofit cause or sector?
- Have an opinion. To be a leader you have to take a stand on an issue. Don’t be afraid to rock the boat if you know it will help your organization and your cause.
👉 Try this: Write down three facts or aspects of your nonprofit or cause you wish people understood. Those are perfect starting points for thought leadership content!
2. Share What You Know & Expand Your Reach 📚
People trust organizations that consistently educate and inform. A great way to build credibility in your content is by sharing insights and knowledge in ways that help others understand and support your cause.
What can you create?
- Social media posts & LinkedIn articles, blog posts, case studies, videos, webinars… whatever fits your audience.
- Speak to new audiences: Submit presentations to conferences (like your state’s nonprofit conference!), guest articles to blogs, or co-host events with partner organizations.
- Collaborate: Partner with others in your space to extend your reach and credibility.
- Find opportunities to speak to diverse audiences.
💡 Try this: Choose one content format and commit to sharing something valuable once a week. And don’t forget to look for one speaking or collaboration opportunity this month and reach out!
3. Engage in Active Conversations 💬
Thought leadership isn’t just about sharing your ideas—it’s also about listening and engaging with your audience in two-way conversations. Be careful not to just post content and disappear (or as my friend Joanne Toller says, don’t “Post and Ghost”)
- Join discussions in nonprofit groups, forums, and social media posts related to your cause.
- Comment on and share articles from other leaders in your field.
- Ask thought-provoking questions in social media posts or blog articles to spark discussions and encourage responses.
- Secure guest spots on podcasts or radio shows
👉 Try this: This week, comment on three social media posts related to your nonprofit’s work.
Try It This Week! 🚀
Just get started. Carve out 10 minutes this week to focus on thought leadership. A year from now, you’ll be so glad you did!
What’s one thing you’ve learned about your cause that others don’t know? Reply and share it with me—I’d love to hear from you! 😊
🎥 And if you're interested in putting this in action on your social media pages, here's a video with some extra tips. 😊
